Letter From The Sellers
Paul and I were looking for a place outside of the city after living for several years on Munjoy Hill in Portland. We love Portland and wanted to find a place nearby so we could still visit our favorite restaurants and shops in the Old Port. When we first visited 1275 Sawyer Road in Cape Elizabeth, we were in awe of the expansive view of the salt marsh and wildlife refuge. We fell in love with the view, the birds, the wildlife and the quiet. Although we are only a few miles from downtown, we feel as though we live at a retreat in our own home. The night sky is black and, on a clear night, there is a blanket of bright stars and constellations overhead. At sunrise, the marsh grasses change from pink, orange and then green every morning. But, it is the bird-watching that we will miss the most. Egrets, herons, hawks and bald eagles soar overhead every day. Since moving to our new home in 2021, we have become true bird lovers, watching for our favorites and listening to the different calls throughout the day.
Our daughters and family visit frequently and stay with us when they come to town. There’s plenty of room for everyone to have their own special niche in the morning for quiet reading or journaling. Our daughters love paddleboarding on the Spurwink River right from our property and Paul and I enjoy spending the afternoon kayaking on the river where you can go up through the grasses and alongside the birds or you can take a longer trip through the marshes out to Higgins Beach. We love the outdoors and nature and our home has become our sanctuary.
When we bought our home, we intended to stay here for many years and we made extensive renovations throughout the home with that in mind. We redesigned the entire first floor, including a brand new kitchen addition, screened porch for coffee and a new bath, entry, mudroom, living room and office. We also completely renovated the upstairs bathrooms and added a second floor deck for viewing the night sky, private sunbathing and bird watching. One of our favorite memories from this spring was watching the eclipse from our upstairs deck.
Last year, the Cape Elizabeth City Council voted to close and remove Sawyer Road from dividing the marsh. We were very excited to see how the removal will improve the marshland and natural environment even more! We didn’t think it was possible to improve the view and the natural habitat, but the removal of the road was a very welcome surprise.
A change in our family circumstances has caused us to put our home on the market, but we have felt blessed to have experienced 1275 Sawyer Road for the last three years.
